The whole nineties revival capturing the fashion world's attention at the moment sure is making me feel old; namely because it's the first trend in my sartorial lifetime that I can remember the first time around. Chokers, mini backpacks, platform trainers - thanks to the Spice Girls I've owned them all. Fashion rules dictate that wearing a trend the second time round is a faux pas - but I believe that's a myth - the secret is to rework the look and incorporate pieces effortlessly into your current wardrobe. Enter the updated backpack - the grown-up girls entry into the nineties trend.

This great bordeaux-hued style came courtesy of New Look [shop here] and thanks to the gold hardware details and textured pleather, I think it looks much more expensive than it's bargain £22.99 [yes - under £25!] price tag.

I styled my backpack in quite a casual look, wearing my sleeveless blazer + skate shoes + a hint of Breton. Another take on the trend is to style your backpack with a pencil skirt and cashmere crew neck knit - unexpected, but this look really works!

Jeans - past season Next [similar]. Navy pony hair skate shoes - Next. Sleeveless blazer dress - Cos. Petit Bateau 'Marin' pullover - Gemini Woman. Burgundy backpack - New Look.
